The night sky over a mountain that matters to you: the stars, the Milky Way and the moon exactly as they were on that night, over the real skyline of the peaks. A proposal on a summit, a first wild camp, a night in a mountain hut, a sunrise climb. Search a summit, such as the Matterhorn or Triglav, and it is shown as seen from a spot a few kilometres away with a clear view of it; or stand on the summit itself and look out over the ranges round it. Search a hut, a campsite or a town and the sky is drawn from there. The skyline is worked out from real elevation data in every direction, out to 60 km. Turn to face the Milky Way or the moon with one tap, or tap the picture to look that way. The peak in the picture is named for you with its official height, in metres or feet, from OpenStreetMap: nothing to look up or type. Five skies: Midnight, Blue hour, Alpenglow, Forest night and Black & gold. Three shapes: the full picture with the words over the land, a window, or an arch on plain paper. Show or hide the Milky Way, the constellation lines and the moon; draw the mountains true to life, taller or dramatic. You get a print-ready PDF at the paper size you choose (A5 to A1, or US sizes from 8×10 to 24×36 inches). Instant download; nothing is posted. Stars: d3-celestial. Skyline: Terrain Tiles on AWS Open Data. Peak names and heights © OpenStreetMap contributors.

Questions

Is it the real sky and the real mountains?
Yes. The stars, the Milky Way and the moon are worked out for the exact place, date and time (from the d3-celestial star catalogue and Astronomy Engine), and the skyline is drawn from real elevation data (the Terrain Tiles on AWS Open Data): for every fifth of a degree round the spot, how high the land rises, out to 60 km, with the curve of the earth.
Which places work?
Any mountain, hut, campsite, viewpoint or valley in the world: search it by name. Search a summit, such as the Matterhorn or Triglav, and it is shown as seen from a spot a few kilometres away with a clear view of it, named over its top; or tap to stand on the summit itself and look out over the ranges round it. Search a hut, a camp or a town and the view is from there.
Which way does it look?
It opens facing the highest mountains. Turn it with the slider or by tapping the picture, or with one tap face the Milky Way or the moon, if they were up that night. Choose a narrow, normal or wide view, and how tall the mountains are drawn: true to life, taller, or dramatic.
What colours are there?
Five skies: Midnight, Blue hour, Alpenglow, Forest night and Black & gold. And three shapes: the full picture with the words over the land, a window, or an arch on plain paper.
Is the moon on it?
If it was above the horizon in the direction you face, yes, in its real phase and lit on the side facing the sun. You can leave it out, and the Milky Way and the constellation lines too.
What does it say?
A title, the date and time, and the place with its coordinates and height, all yours to change. The peak in the picture is named for you, with its official height in metres or feet from OpenStreetMap: turn the view and the name follows, or leave it off.
What size is it?
Portrait, at the paper size you choose, from A5 to A1 or 8×10 to 24×36 inches. It prints at home or at any print shop.
When do I get my files?
