Is it the real night?
Yes. The strength of the aurora is the night's real Kp index, the strongest three hours between 18:00 and 06:00 at your place, from GFZ Potsdam's archive (CC BY 4.0), which goes back to 1932. On the map it becomes how far the aurora reached: the band where it was overhead, and a dashed line to where it could still be seen low over the horizon.
Is it a photo of the aurora?
No, it is a map. The band is drawn from a model of the auroral oval for that night's Kp, round the earth's magnetic pole of that year, so it shows how far the aurora reached, not the colours you saw in the sky.
Which nights work?
Any night from 1932 to last night, anywhere in the world. South of the equator it becomes the southern lights, round the southern pole.
What colours are there?
Two, both on a deep night blue: Polar night, with a green aurora, and Great storm, pink and green like the strongest nights. And four shapes: a circle, a square, a window or the full sheet.
What does it say?
The place, the night with its Kp, and the coordinates, all yours to change, and a small key under the map. You can leave the key out.
What size is it?
Portrait, at the paper size you choose, from A5 to A1 or 8×10 to 24×36 inches. It prints at home or at any print shop.
