  • Real yarn shades from cool blue to warm red: Stylecraft, DROPS, Red Heart
  • Knit or crochet, any width: rows and yarn worked out
  • PDF pattern: cover, instructions, row list, frameable print
Knit or crochet the warming stripes of your own town: one row (or a few) for every year since 1940, each in the colour of that year's average temperature, from cool blues to warm reds. Start in 1940, or in the year someone was born, and the scarf is their life in stripes. The years are worked out from Open-Meteo's weather records for the place you choose, and the colours are centred on its own average, as the original climate stripes are. Make it a scarf (the rows for each year chosen so it comes out about 165 cm long) or a blanket. The colour list names real shades and their numbers in Stylecraft Special DK (UK), DROPS Paris (Europe) or Red Heart Super Saver (US), with how many balls of each to buy; or use your own colours. Knit or crochet, in double crochet (UK) / single crochet (US), moss stitch, half treble, garter or stocking stitch; choose the width and the pattern works out the length, the stitches to start with and the yarn. You get a PDF pattern (A4 or US Letter): the cover with your design and the colour list, the instructions, every row with a box to tick, and a print of the finished piece to frame. Instant download; nothing is posted. Weather: Open-Meteo.com historical data (CC BY 4.0).

Questions

What is a temperature blanket?
A blanket with one row for every day of a year, each row in the colour of that day's temperature: cold blues in winter, warm yellows and reds in summer. Here the year can be any year from 1940 on, anywhere in the world: a baby's birth year, a wedding year, the year you moved.
Is it the real weather?
Yes. Every day's high, low and average and its weather come from Open-Meteo's historical records (CC BY 4.0), for the exact place you choose. The pattern lists each day with its temperature.
Which yarn do I need?
The pattern names real shades and their numbers in Stylecraft Special DK (UK), DROPS Paris (Europe) or Red Heart Super Saver (US), with how many balls of each to buy. Or use yarn you already have: add your own colours in order from cold to warm, and the pattern tells you how many grams of each you need.
How big is the blanket?
You choose the width, and the length follows from the rows: the designer shows the finished size as you choose the stitch and the yarn, worked out from the stitch's usual tension. Enter your own tension square for exact sizes. A row per week makes a smaller blanket.
What else can colour the rows?
Besides the day's high, average or low and the sky: each day's rain and snow, its hours of daylight, the moon's phase each night, or warming stripes (a row for every year since 1940, coloured by its average temperature). Daylight and the moon work for any year, past or to come.
Can I make a scarf instead?
Yes: choose a scarf in the designer, for a whole year or a trip of a few days or weeks. The pattern chooses how many rows each day takes, so the scarf comes out about 165 cm long, or set it yourself.
Does it have to be stripes?
No: choose stripes (a row a day), high & low (each row half the day's high, half the night's low), granny squares (a square a day, with a map of where each goes) or a calendar (twelve months laid out like calendar pages).
Knitting or crochet?
Either: double crochet (UK) / single crochet (US), moss stitch, half treble, garter or stocking stitch. The pattern explains how to start and how each row is worked.
What is a sky blanket?
The same idea with the colour of each day's sky: blue for clear days, greys for cloud, slate for rain, white for snow. Usually knitters have to watch the sky every day; this gives you any past year.
What do I get?
A PDF pattern to print: the cover with your blanket and the colour list, the instructions, every row with its date, weather and colour and a box to tick, and a print of the finished blanket to frame.
When do I get my files?
Straight away. After paying you land on your download page, and the receipt email links to it too. The link stays open for 30 days (for a gift, 30 days from the day it's delivered), so download your files and keep them safe. If you need them again later, just write to us.
Is anything posted to me?
No — these are digital files. You print them yourself at home or at a print shop, so there's no shipping and no waiting.
Can I give it as a gift?
Yes. In the cart, tick “Send it as a gift”: we email it to them with your message, on the day you choose. You get the download link as well.
